National Association of Broadcasters...scare tactic TV spot

Maybe you have seen the recently broadcast commercial stating that there are certain interest groups that want to limit free TV. First the government mandates all broadcast signals be digital forcing the use of a converter to translate digital signals to analog. This was a foolish and greedy plan by the government to sell part of the electromagnet spectrum for a profit. It did not go smoothly. And now this proposal. Even if it does go into effect...so what. There is so little quality on television anyway and one must be bombarded with insane commercials telling us to buy, buy, buy...their junk. And don't forget the PBS fund drives featuring T. J. Lubinsky's rise to fame, near dead doo wop groups and individuals, and promotion for lining the pockets of Wayne Dyer and the like. Write, read a book, take a walk.

"Broadcasters Begin Airing Spots Promoting Free TV"

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has produced a TV spot informing viewers of discussions in Washington that could limit free, over-the-air broadcast television. The 30-second spot, produced in English and Spanish, was distributed via satellite in late December and has been airing on local stations this month. The TV spot comes on the heels of several third-party filings submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calling for the reallocation of broadcast spectrum for new wireless broadband devices.

“Following NAB’s historic campaign to educate Americans on the benefits of the government-mandated digital TV transition, we feel it is equally important to ensure our viewers are aware of proposals in Washington now aimed at limiting free and local DTV service,” said NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton. “We remain committed to a dialogue with policymakers and legislators on how to best serve the needs of the American people for fast Internet access without jeopardizing digital TV’s promised potential for millions of TV viewers.”

The full script of the 30 second spot reads:

“It’s our connection to our community. It’s our lifeline to the emergency information we need. It’s a free service that provides free entertainment.

“But one day soon, it could be taken away. There’s a movement among special interest groups to limit free antenna TV, and millions of Americans who depend on it would lose out.

“Always free, always local. Let’s tell Congress to keep free antenna TV as part of our communications future.”

as you well know i had the television shut off a few months ago. it simply had become so irrelevant it was not funny. i have no idea what the rest of the nation wants but i wish they would move it to the internet and in many ways already have. they have for people such as i who would rather spend the time in a good lecture without having to haul me down to the university. the masses tho, who equally love People magazine, the trash will continue. this effects mostly the poor who seem to have not only cable but mobile phones on which they can watch television. i think what we need to fear is that soon the technology will be more intelligent than the user.
